Press Play on Tape

A quali scoperte porta la rete! Partendo da Monkey Island (vedi il post precedente) ho trovato su Youtube un video dei Press Play on Tape. Andando a curiosare sul loro sito, ho scoperto che questo gruppo esegue cover di sigle di videogiochi (specialmente vecchie glorie del Commodore 64) e di film e serie tv.
Sono veramente grandiosi, vale davvero la pena di vedere questi video, che sicuramente non mancheranno di riportarvi alla mente vecchie memorie...

Sometimes through the web one can make such discoveries! Starting from Monkey Island (see previous post) I've found on Youtube a video by Press Play on Tape. Browsing their web page I've discovered that this group performs covers of videogames (esp. great oldies of Commodore 64) and of movies and tv series.
They are really cool, do check out these video, which also will surely bring back old memories...

Oggi vi posto il tema di quello che a mio parere è il miglior videogioco mai fatto, Monkey Island (ma lo faranno mai Monkey Island 5??).
Il primo video - ovviamente è d'obbligo postarlo - è la versione sulla steelpan caraibica (perdonatemi, mi sfugge il nome in italiano...).
Il secondo è invece una grandiosa esibizione dei Press Play on Tape.

Per chi fosse preoccupato che l'esperimento LHC al CERN di Ginevra il prossimo 21 Ottobre (e non il 10 Settembre come scritto sui giornali) possa causare la fine del mondo:

In sintesi, quanto verrà creato dalla collisione nell'LHC è un fenomeno che avviene normalmente in natura, senza che noi ce ne accorgiamo.
E se poi qualcuno si chiedesse come mai allora abbiamo bisogno di così tanti anni, scienziati (8000 da centinaia di università in 85 paesi nel mondo) ed energia (a regime, un consumo di 700 GW/h, un quindicesimo del consumo dell'intero Canton Ticino) per riprodurlo e studiarlo, io banalmente rispondo che ciò, ancora una volta, dimostra che:

1) siamo veramente molto piccoli e limitati rispetto alla natura;

2) nonostante ciò, siamo in grado di realizzare strumenti i quali ci consentono di osservare ciò che, senza di essi, non sarebbe mica così facile vedere con i nostri sensi limitati.

For those who happen to be concerned that the LHC experiment at CERN in Geneva of the forthcoming October 21st (and not on the September 1oth as claimed by newspapers) might cause the end of the world:

In a few words, what will happen at LHC is a phenomenon that normally occurs in nature, without us noticing.
And, if someone is wondering why do we need so many years' time, so many scientists (8000, from hundreds of universities in 85 countries) and so much energy (at full regime about 700 GW/h, about 1/15th of Ticino Canton energy's consumtion) to study it, I will trivially answer that this, once again, demonstrates that:

1) we are really tiny and limited compared to nature;

2) despite this, we are able to build instruments that enable us to observe what, otherwise, wouldn't be that easy to see with our limited senses.

Questo nome curioso è uno dei tanti usato per indicare un liquido dalla caratteristica alquanto particolare: si può versare, e mescolare con un cucchiaio come un qualsiasi liquido, ma se invece viene colpito con forza, allora si comporta come un solido. Ci si può quindi ad esempio camminare sopra, o si può raccoglierlo a mani nude... e con l'ausilio di un subwoofer ed un getto d'aria si può essere anche alquanto creativi.
A noi scienziati un liquido con simili caratteristiche piace chiamarlo fluido non-Newtoniano (per distinguerlo da un liquido normale, che è un fluido Newtoniano).
In casa, si può realizzare semplicemente con acqua ed amido (ad esempio, maizena, che è amido di mais).

This funny name is used to indicate a liquid with a very peculiar characteristic: it can be poured, and can be stirred with a spoon like a common liquid, but, if stroken with force, it behaves like a solid. For example, one can therefore walk on it, or pick it up with bare hands... and, with the help of a subwoofer and a strean of air, one can also be rather creative.
Scientist like to call a liquid with such properties a non-Newtonian fluid (as opposed to a common liquid, which is a Newtonian fluid).
At home, one can make such a fluid with just water and starch (e.g. maizena, which is corn starch).

Bloody Design

Questo sì che è un design che colpisce... questo tavolo (trovato su Apartment Therapy) sembra proprio una lastra sospesa. E fa il paio con un set di coltelli che si vede in giro già da un bel pò di tempo.

This table (found on Apartment Therapy) really gives the impression of a floating board... it's really an impressive design, or rather I should say 'bloody design'... And it goes together with a knife set that we have already been seeing around for quite some time now.
