Katrina Kaye

Qualche anno fa, Bianca mi ha fatto scoprire queste borse di Katrin Kaye. Realizzate a mano, riciclando borse militari su cui vengono applicate colorate stoffe vintage, per tutti i gusti.
Ad Amsterdam c'è un banchetto che le vende al mercato di Nieuwmarkt durante il fine settimana (posto dove in genere passavo un'ora buona a dover scegliere una sola borsa, e scartando a malincuore tutte le altre).
Altrimenti, c'è sempre il negozio online su Etsy di Katrina Kaye.

A few years ago, Bianca made me discover these bags by Katrina Kaye. These bags are hand-made by recycling military bags by applying colourful vintage fabrics.
In Amsterdam during the weekend there is a stand at the market in Nieuwmarkt (where I used to spend one hour, having to choose only one bag out of all the other nice ones, which I had to discard).
Alternatively, you can buy them online on the Katrina Kaye's Etsy shop.

Heineken

Come qualcuno mi ha appena ricordato, la Heineken fa delle belle pubblicità. Almeno, è quello che posso dire per quanto riguarda quelle trasmesse in Olanda, quando ogni tanto ancora guardavo la tv. Adesso francamente non saprei dire cosa arriva sulla tv italiana...
NB. Il primo che posto credo che sia lo spot più popolare della Heineken, ricordo che lo trasmettevano in tv i primi tempi che ero ad Amsterdam. ^^
NB2. Biertje in olandese è l'equivalente di "birretta".

As someone just reminded me, Heineken makes nice commercials. At least, as far as I can tell of the ads I saw in The Netherlands, when I still used to watch tv sometimes. But honestly I am not able to tell wether these make it to Italian tv or not...
PS. The first ad I am posting I believe is the most popular Heineken one.

Corso per interpretare le istruzioni degli aerei

Guardando le immagini di questo video (molto divertente!), mi vengono alla mente due considerazioni che sono solo apparentemente contrastanti.
Una è che, talvolta, trovandoci di fronte a delle immagini palesemente assurde, la nostra mente ha la tendenza a scartare l'interpretazione assurda, che è quella più evidente, a favore di una meno evidente ma più sensata e razionale.
La seconda è che può bastare mettere da Parte per un momento questi schemi della nostra mente ed 'accendere' un pò di fantasia, per guardare oltre un'immagine apparentemente perfettamente sensata e dargli un'interpretazione completamente diversa (e che ha pienamente senso, seppur assurda).

After looking at the pictures in this video (which is very funny!), I had two thoughts crossing my mind, which are only apparently in contrast with each other:
The first being that, sometimes, when we come across images that obviously make no sense, our mind has the tendency of discarding an absurd interpretation, though more evident, in favour of an interpretation that is less evident but seems rational and makes more sense.
The second is that if you forget only for a moment those mental schemes and 'switch on' some fantasy, then you can see beyond a completely rational image and make a completely different interpretation (and that makes perfectly sense even if absurd).

Science dance contest

Non c'è modo più efficace per trasmettere ed apprendere un concetto della rappresentazione visiva, anche quando si tratta di argomenti complessi come quelli scientifici*, soprattutto quando si tratta di una rappresentazione artistica e ancora meglio se è piacevole o divertente.
Due ottimi esempi sono i progetti "Dance your PhD" e "Science Dance", di cui vi posto un paio di video. Spero vi piacciano, in futuro ne posterò degli altri.

* Non a caso, alcune fra le più brillanti menti della scienza erano in grado di immaginarsi visivamente i fenomeni che studiavano; un esempio notevole sono il fisico Richard Feynman ed i diagrammi che portano il suo nome, da lui concepiti per rappresentare le interazioni fra particelle subatomiche -- ma qui si tratta di veri e propri strumenti scientifici, non di disegni divulgativi.


There is no better way to divulge and learn concepts than a visual representation, even if it's a complex scientific topic*, especially with arts and even better if it's an entertaining or funny one.
Great examples are the two projects "Dance your PhD" and "Science Dance", of which I am posting a couple of videos. Hope you'll enjoy them, I'll post more in the future.

* It's not a coincidence that some of the most brilliant scientific minds were capable of thinking visually the phenomena that they were studying; famous examples are physicist Richard Feynman and the diagrams named after him, which he conceived to represent the interactions between subatomic particles -- though these are scientific tools, not just divulgative drawings.

Dopo essermi imbattuta in questo test per l'ennesima volta, ho deciso che a questo punto non posso non postarlo.
Scoprite la vostra abilità nel distinguere le sfumature di colore! Mi dicono che questo test funzioni meglio con lo schermo del pc fisso che con quello portatile.
Il test è stato elaborato dalla X-Rite, azienda produttrice di strumenti di misurazione e calibrazione del colore, con la quale una volta stavo quasi per fare un progetto di sviluppo di uno standard di colore da usare com lo stereomicroscopio.

After stumbling upon this test once more, I've decided that I ought to post it!
Find out your ability to distinguish little colour variations! I've heard that this test works best with a desktop screen, rather than with a laptop screen.
The test has been designed by X-Rite, a company that produces colour measurement and calibration instruments; a few years ago I nearly started a project with them, on the development of a colour standard for stereomicroscopes.

Non posso ritardare ulteriormente questa notizia, anche se i fan di Terry Pratchett ne saranno quasi certamente già a conoscenza. Con l'arrivo dell'anno nuovo, Terry Pratchett è stato onorato del titolo di cavaliere dalla Regina Elisabetta (assieme a lui, fra gli altri, anche Robert Plant dei Led Zeppelin).
Congratulazioni vivissime al mio scrittore preferito, che continua a scrivere libri ad una velocità maggiore di quella con cui io riesca a leggerli (visto che mi piace leggere anche altro...).
Per la cronaca, al momento sto leggendo Hogfather, di cui è stato fatto anche un bell'adattamento come film per la tv (e, successivamente, ed anche più bello, Il Colore della Magia).

I really cannot delay this news any further, although fans of Terry Pratchett certainly already know about it. With the coming of the new year, Terry Pratchett has been awarded the knighthood by Queen Elizabeth (among others, also Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin).
My warmest congratulations to my favourite writer, who keeps writing books faster than I can actually read them (I like to read other books, too...).
For the record, at the moment I am reading Hogfather, which has been nicely adapted in a tv film (and, afterwards, also an even nicer The Colour of Magic).

Ok, sembra abbia un pò da recuperare su questo blog, ma del resto si sa che con i blog funziona così. ^^
Per riprendere, vorrei postarvi un video da TedTalks già postato da Behnaz un pò di tempo fa, un talk di Tim Brown su gioco e creatività. E' un pò lungo, ma molto interessante. Non mi dispiacerebbe affatto lavorare per quella società... ^^

For a new start, I'd like to post a video from TedTalks, posted a while ago by Behnaz, a talk by Tim Brown about creativity and play. It's a bit long, but very interesting. I would love working for that company... ^^
