E' la fine del mondo!

ahah, ma naturalmente non è vero, e tanto lo so che non c'è cascato nessuno, è già qualche giorno che quest'immagine è in giro (immagine di Leonardo e scoperta grazie a Discanto).

In ogni caso, in realtà l'attività in programma oggi era 'solo' un 'giro di prova in pista' nel tunnel di uno solo dei due fasci di protoni, e che invece verranno fatti collidere all'inizio dell'anno prossimo (insomma, oggi hanno solo acceso l'apparato).

Devo dire che sono davvero felice che un'esperimento scientifico venga seguito con tanta attenzione come si sta facendo in questi giorni (e per fortuna, se non ha risonanza questo, che potrebbe essere l'esperimento del secolo...). Chissà che su questa scia il governo italiano non decida di stanziare più fondi alla ricerca (non è che ci speri, eh).

Una grandiosa inaugurazione oggi! Complimenti a tutti i ricercatori del CERN e buon lavoro!

Mi sono appena casualmente imbattuta in questo video sulle tecniche di pulitura impiegate nel restauro di opere d'arte pittoriche, realizzato all'Instituut Collectie Nederland (ICN), l'Istituto Olandese per i Beni Culturali, e spiegato dal restauratore (e mio vecchio collega dei tempi di Amsterdam) Klaas-Jan van der Berg. Il video è 'riservato' a chi parla olandese (o, possibilmente, tedesco).

I have just stumbled upon this video on cleaning techniques used for the restauration of paintings works of art, filmed at the Instituut Collectie Nederland (ICN) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Istitute for Cultural Heritage, and illustrated by restaurator (and old colleague of mine when I was in Amsterdam) Klaas-Jan van der Berg. A quali scoperte porta la rete! Partendo da Monkey Island (vedi il post precedente) ho trovato su Youtube un video dei Press Play on Tape. Andando a curiosare sul loro sito, ho scoperto che questo gruppo esegue cover di sigle di videogiochi (specialmente vecchie glorie del Commodore 64) e di film e serie tv.
Sono veramente grandiosi, vale davvero la pena di vedere questi video, che sicuramente non mancheranno di riportarvi alla mente vecchie memorie...

Sometimes through the web one can make such discoveries! Starting from Monkey Island (see previous post) I've found on Youtube a video by Press Play on Tape. Browsing their web page I've discovered that this group performs covers of videogames (esp. great oldies of Commodore 64) and of movies and tv series.
They are really cool, do check out these video, which also will surely bring back old memories...

In sintesi, quanto verrà creato dalla collisione nell'LHC è un fenomeno che avviene normalmente in natura, senza che noi ce ne accorgiamo.
E se poi qualcuno si chiedesse come mai allora abbiamo bisogno di così tanti anni, scienziati (8000 da centinaia di università in 85 paesi nel mondo) ed energia (a regime, un consumo di 700 GW/h, un quindicesimo del consumo dell'intero Canton Ticino) per riprodurlo e studiarlo, io banalmente rispondo che ciò, ancora una volta, dimostra che:

1) siamo veramente molto piccoli e limitati rispetto alla natura;

2) nonostante ciò, siamo in grado di realizzare strumenti i quali ci consentono di osservare ciò che, senza di essi, non sarebbe mica così facile vedere con i nostri sensi limitati.

In a few words, what will happen at LHC is a phenomenon that normally occurs in nature, without us noticing.

Questo nome curioso è uno dei tanti usato per indicare un liquido dalla caratteristica alquanto particolare: si può versare, e mescolare con un cucchiaio come un qualsiasi liquido, ma se invece viene colpito con forza, allora si comporta come un solido. Ci si può quindi ad esempio camminare sopra, o si può raccoglierlo a mani nude... e con l'ausilio di un subwoofer ed un getto d'aria si può essere anche alquanto creativi.
A noi scienziati un liquido con simili caratteristiche piace chiamarlo fluido non-Newtoniano (per distinguerlo da un liquido normale, che è un fluido Newtoniano).
In casa, si può realizzare semplicemente con acqua ed amido (ad esempio, maizena, che è amido di mais).

This funny name is used to indicate a liquid with a very peculiar characteristic: it can be poured, and can be stirred with a spoon like a common liquid, but, if stroken with force, it behaves like a solid. La prima volta che guardai questo video (su segnalazione di Behnaz) non mi piacque molto, pensai 'Uh? Che ha di speciale?'. Poi chissà come cambiai idea e adesso è uno di queli che di tanto in tanto 'sento il bisogno' di rivedere... ancora non sono ancora riuscita a capire cosa lo renda speciale, ma di sicura ha un suo fascino che dà dipendenza. =P

The first time I watched this video (got notice of it from Behnaz) I didn't quite like it, I was like 'Uh? What's so special about it?'. Then I changed my mind, and now it's one of those that every now and then I 'need' to watch again... I yet haven't managed to identify what it is that makes it so special, however it's definitively addictive. =P

L'Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio

Anche se ieri mi sono persa i Buena Vista Social Club, un paio di settimane fa grazie a un amico ho invece finalmente avuto l'occasione di ascoltare dal (vivo!) l'Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, una band nata nel cuore multietnico di Roma e miscela di suoni, colori e profumi di vari paesi.
PS. A fine concerto l'orchestra ci ha regalato un'esecuzione di Caravan Petrol davvero piacevolissima.

Even though yesterday I missed the Buena Vista Social Club, thanks to a friend a couple of weeks back I finally had the chance of listening (live!) to the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, a band born in the multietnic hearth of Rome and mix of sounds, colours and fragrances of various countries.
PS. At the end of the concert, the orchestra gifted us of a lovely performance of Caravan Petrol.

MoodLight Room

Fu un'esperienza talmente piacevole che è da quando mi ci sono imbattuta al museo scientifico di Liverpool due anni fa che desidero avere una 'mood-light room', cioè una stanza completamente illuminata da una luce colorata lentamente cangiante.
Questo video davvero spettacolare di Brilldea non poteva perciò passare inosservato...

It was such a pleasant experience that it's since I've been in there at the science museum of Liverpool two years ago that I am dreaming of having a 'mood-light room', i.e. a room that is completely lit by a slowly colour-changing light.

I was nine. She was seven. There were mosquitos flying around the lamp and a dead beatle in the balcony. I was telling her the story of a lady with long hair in a long robe, who is living in the sky, and floating like a baloon. If the lady opens her arms she will cover the whole sky, from the mountains in the north to the horizon in the south.
- ... and if she moves, she collects all the mosquitos and beatles in the sky, and all the flys too, and then we can sleep safe outside in the balcony.
- and the bombs?
- ...and all the bombs too.
- But they are not in the air, they are in airplanes.
- Look, either you sleep or I'll tell mum that you are making my story scary.

THE BIG DAY

God will take the microphone one of these days. He will cast a look not exactly toarwd the crowd, and he will extend his arm to scratch his head.
